Crawling = a whole new ball game

In June Penny started crawling, which made life a bit more interesting.

It was also in June that we went on an adventure with mother’s group to the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour.

We also decided it was time to move Penny’s cot base lower because she started pulling herself upright.

Penny discovered my laptop. So I installed a Penny-proof program (Alpha-baby) to make sure she didn’t delete everything.

Sierra encouraged Penny to learn to crawl and stand up, Penny reciprocated by teaching Sierra how to button mash my laptop.

Nudie photo!

Penny discovered TV

And decided that tipping her lunch every where was a good idea

In June we took Penny on her first ferry ride.

followed by some multitasking by Lindsay at Max Brenner, he ate chocolate, did on-call work and put a baby to sleep.

Penny took up sitting in her toy boxes/buckets/baskets

We went with Sierra and her mummy to a play-school concert. I think I had more fun than Penny, she was more interested in eating Sierra’s toys.

In June I bought Penny a standing toy thingy, it plays old macdonald. Its really annoying!

Penny started a new phase of chewing on cables

And Penny had her first swimming lesson! Lindsay took her in the pool for the class, along with Lilly (from my mother’s group) and her Dad Kevin.

The first lesson was a success…the rest were not so successful.

In June Penny was still not sleeping at night, and after some very stressful nights with no sleep I decided that sawing Penny’s cot into pieces was a great idea. I then tied it to my bed using stockings. (white stockings can be seen in the top left hand corner)

We joined in on a mother’s group photo shoot in June. The only way that we could stop Penny from stuffing leaves in her mouth was Olivia, Lilly’s mum, to sing wiggles songs!

Now don’t cry, there are more blog posts to come…or maybe thats a good reason to cry…

Penny May celebrates May

In May we let Penny get messy. I think if at the end of the day you are grubby and dirty then you have had a pretty good day.

But all this mess meant Penny needed a lovely hot bath every evening.

Penny May 2011

Penny

After a couple of stories, it is bedtime.
Penny

Every night we would put Penny to bed. She would be awake 1 hour later…with absolutely no intention of going to bed. I think she would rather spend time with the family (mostly Jacob) than be asleep.

Penny May 2011

I would wake up in the morning with her in bed with us. And sometimes no memory what so ever of having put her there.

In May Penny graduated to the toddler seat of shopping trolleys.

We went on our first family picnic in May,

I am powering through these blogs posts! Things are looking up!

Life gets busy

So it turns out, having a baby is so very time consuming. If you were to look at this blog before this point you would think Penny is still 4 months old. In fact, she is now 11 months old - nearly a whole year old!

How about I catch you up a bit…

As Penny became more aware of her surroundings we started making mummy and baby friends.

Sierra is one of Penny’s best friends. Sierra was born the day after Penny:
Playdate

She would have naps in her funky little swing:
Penny

Then she started being on the move and would not be where you left her!
Penny

She developed a passion (addiction) for the iPad:
Penny

In preparation for a night with Nanna we tried to get Penny to drink from a bottle. She would only drink from the bottle if she held it herself.
Penny

At the begining of April we moved to the Decates household before our trip to Europe and to save some money to buy our own house. One of our first mornings in Berowra Penny sat up unaided for the first time! With her favourite uncle Jacob there for moral support.
Penny

In April she learnt about grass:

About sharing with her friend Lilly:

And how a washing basket can easily become a boat:

At the ripe old age of 6 months we packed our bags:

We visited the Troups in Yorkshire:

February and Penny is 4 months old

February was a busy month for Penny. She met many developmental miles stones and really ‘woke up’

She is a real Mummy’s girl, and over February she became very attached to me. Which is lovely…but also means I am not allowed to leave her side for very long.
Penny
Unless she is with her Daddy. When Daddy is there, she only has eyes for him. She loves her Daddy and I often keep her up to see Lindsay once he gets home from work. He works from home 2 days a week, so is able to have cuddles all day when he at home.
Penny

She started letting us know she was tired by rubbing her eyes, which I find super cute.
Penny

Penny got much better at tummy time and started holding her head up for longer periods of time
Penny

Penny started the “shark phase” chewing on and sucking on everything and anything.
Penny

She got in touch with nature
Penny

We moved her from a bassinet to a co-sleeper cot. Which basically involved us taking a side off her cot and pushing it up against my side of our bed. So she can easily move from her bed to our bed, which is lovely.
Penny
She no longer needs to be wrapped up to sleep, and likes to lay on her right side, sometimes snuggled up to the Nellie the elephant.

Meet Nellie.
Penny
She plays Fur Elise…waaaaaayyyyy too fast.

I did a little photo shoot, playing around with Lindsay’s nice camera.
Penny 16 weeks

Penny has many funny faces

and she loves being in front of the camera!

We had a couple of cooler days which gave Lindsay the chance to try out the ring sling
Penny

And Penny continued to charm her grandparents
Penny

And loves showing off to them how she can roll over
Penny

She has started taking her naps on flat teddy. She likes to be close to me, and lay on her right side so sleeping on flat teddy in the lounge room is perfect.
Penny

I discovered that she loves ‘helping’ with the laundry. She loves watching me hang out the clothes, but she hasn’t been invited back to help me fold the washing.
Penny

After rolling over in the big bath and trying to drink up the bath water, giving us a bit of a fright, she now bathes in her tummy tub. Which is great for everyone! No more sitting on the bath room floor and she gets to chew on her feet.
Penny

Did I mention she found her feet?
Penny
Its super cute when she goes to grab a foot and misses because her foot moved. She stares at it quizzically and grabs for it again.

She is exceptionally cuddly! And is very happy just to sit there an be cuddled. She might vomit on you, but its worth it.
Penny

Because with a smile like that, the vomit is hardly noticeable.
Penny

While feeding her Penny like to play with my fingers and rings.
Penny

We are slowly starting solids. She tried some watermelon at her Gran and Pop’s house. I dared remove it from her mouth and she began to shake and cry until I put it back in her mouth. I guess she liked it then.
Penny

I also tried giving her some rice cereal, but have gone back to giving her only fruit and vegetables.
Penny

She does massive yawns which are just too cute.
DSC_0315

One of her favourite things to do it lay on the floor in the nude watching TV.
Penny

She has improved her grabbing skills (much better already again since this video) and is good at picking up toys. She is a real chatter box and loves to squeal!

Playing 8/2/11 from Julia & Lindsay Holmwood on Vimeo.

And finally,
She is obsessed with our iPhones. Wanting to grab them, and suck on them! I don’t know how slobber proof they are… She has so far managed to send 1 SMS and 1 tweet to twitter. Both times I was holding her and the phone in my lap. I looked up and looked down and she had button mashed in the right order! I sometimes let her watch herself on the iPhone screen, and the other day she hit the record button!

January and Penny is 3 months old.

Penny is now 4 months old and I have written a total of 4 blog posts about her. I blame her. She likes to have my constant attention. And I am very very happy to give her my constant attention! This post is about what she got up to in her 3rd month, January.

In Jaurary when I last blogged she was starting to develop a real personality.
Penny
note her foot.

She worked on her smiling and started to drool.
Penny

We went on our first family outing to the architecture of air, it was amazing! More photos of that here: Architecture of Air

She worked out how to unwrap herself after a nap:
Penny
….and developed an evil persona apparently.

And names were decided for Lindsay’s parents.
Penny
Gran and Pop! So now Penny has a very proud Nanna, Opa, Gran and Pop!

We learnt that she is very much like her father while asleep
Penny
sleeping in the same position and also sleep talking/laughing just like him.

Getting her to take naps was and continues to be a time consuming task. I often resorted to letting her sleep on my lap.
Penny

She started going out for breakfast each weekend with Lindsay, giving me a chance to sleep in, have a long hot shower and a hot cup of tea!
Penny

Penny decided that without a doubt that Jacob is the most fascinating, amazing person ever.
Penny
No matter what she may be doing, the moment he enters the room she stares and smiles at him.

I bought her a Bumbo off ebay which she only just tolerates…
Penny

She was introduced to the world of video games by Uncle jacob
Penny

Penny developed a love for tv. And by love I mean addiction.
Penny

We joined Lindsay in Brisbane for a conference (LCA) and spent a week wandering around Brisbane and spending our evenings with Lindsay at conference functions.
Penny
She was such a good girl. On the plane to Brisbane she charmed all the flight attendants. We had many late nights, but she would sleep happily in her stroller not at all concerned by the noise and people.

In Brisbane she taught herself how to squeal!

Penny squees from Julia & Lindsay Holmwood on Vimeo.

She rolled over for the first time, but then promptly forgot how to do it.

Penny’s first Christmas

A few weeks before Christmas we put up our Christmas ‘tree’. Lying under the Christmas tree staring up at the baubles kept Penny entertained while I wrapped Christmas presents.
Penny

It was hard work preparing for Christmas day, she would snooze in the stroller while I did Christmas shopping.
Christmas

Each year, Santa drives past my parent’s house. I remember Jacob and I sprinting up the driveway to see Santa. Its so special that Penny gets to enjoy this too.
Her first encounter with Santa, she was not impressed, Penny was more interested in sucking on her fists.
Penny

On Christmas morning we went to my parents place. There were so many presents under the tree, Penny almost got lost.
Christmas

I am worried that she doesn’t get enough love and attention…

Penny got some lovely presents including a book about a Mole with poo on his head…with sound effects!!

She got a lovely dress on loan from the NZ relations

Each night Lindsay bathed her in the laundry sink (she no longer fits!), she loves to kick and would push off the sides of the sink as she floated in the water. Her routine is very important to her, bath then straight to bed. If we disturb it, we get into trouble!

In Hospital

Penelope was born beautiful and perfect. Sadly I was not doing so well so we ended up spending 5 days in hospital.

Due to the epidural I had an intense headache, a roaring sound in my ears and a sensitivity to light. I was put on endone to help with the pain. But the endone made me horribly dizzy. Add to that my caesearean wound which was so painful. I didn’t get any sleep for 5 nights straight. There was no nursery on the maternity ward and the night midwives were not especially helpful, I couldn’t sit up because I would faint and I couldn’t roll onto my side to reach the baby’s cot due to all the tubes and the caesarean wound. My mum would arrive at 8am in the morning, and look after me all day.

Me, mum and Penny

Lindsay would arrive in the afternoon and stay until 3am helping me look after Penelope.
IMG_0112

They were so fantastic. I couldn’t have survived without them to look after me. It was so horrible being in hospital. But Penelope made it totally bearable.

Each day family would visit
Penny and Uncle Jacob

After 4 days in hospital I hit a wall. I started vomiting and still couldn’t get out of bed without fainting and I just wasn’t improving. So my mum tucked me up in bed, tucked Penelope up in her cot and stood guard outside our room. She would not let anyone in while we slept and demanded that the doctors find a way to make me better. The anesthetist saved me, he took me off the endone and prescribed caffeine pills. Within 15 minutes I began to feel human! I was still in a lot of pain, in my head and wound, but I was able to get out of bed and have a shower for the first time in days. The caffeine pills helped my headache caused by the first epidural.

While in hospital Lindsay gave Penelope her first bath because I was still unable to get out of bed.
first bath

She loved it, and was so relaxed in the water.
first bath

Once I was on the caffeine pills and I was feeling better I begged to go home. My head was pounding, I felt like I was going to vomit but I smiled and chatted away to the midwife to prove I was fine to go home. I couldn’t stand the though of another sleepless night being unable to move and looking after Penelope by myself.

We were so eager to leave that we put Penelope in her capsule and needed a safe spot to put the capsule…so my Mum put her in the sink!

After a lot of unnecessary waiting we were free!!!! Look how happy we are!

My mum drove us back to Lindsay’s and my home. I climbed into my lovely comfortable bed and began to feel better just being in my own bed.

Up next, millions of photos of Penny’s first 4 weeks.

Penelope May is Born

Our baby was due to be born on the 19th of October. And on the 19th of October my belly looked like this:
40 weeks

10 minutes after the photo was taken, my waters broke. My mum, Lindsay and I went to the hospital. I wasn’t yet in labour so they sent us home. For the next 36 hours we tried to get labour started.

Mum doing some reflexology on my feet
DSC_0369

I would get a few contractions which would then stop. Due to a risk of infection it was necessary to head to hospital and be induced after 3 days.

We had the world’s most annoying midwife, fortunately her shift finished and the rest were lovely. After 5 hours of labouring I was examined and only 1cm dilated. I then decided to ask for an epidural because we were going to be there for a long time.

IMG_1882

The first epidural went wrong which meant I would have a headache for the next 2 weeks. The 2nd epidural caused my back to spasm. I wasn’t able to feel the contractions but the pain in my back was so great I screamed a lot despite my high pain threshold. Every time they added more drugs to the epidural the pain increased. I had my Mum and Lindsay with me. They were both amazing looking after me. It must have been so exhausting being awake all day and all night, seeing me in so much pain. After 13 hours of labour I was still only 1cm dilated, so the doctors decided Penny had to come out via a caesarean.

So at 8.30am I was wheeled onto surgery. The anethetist put more drugs into the epidural, making me scream even more. I kept apologising for making so much noise, but then would go back to screaming. He then made me completely numb from the waist down and the pain was gone! And up went the curtains. so I didn’t have to watch Penny being cut out.

Ow :-(
DSC_0414

Lindsay was with me talking about the most boring work related things he could think about to keep my mind off the fact that a baby was being cut out of me. At one stage I looked up into the light above me and saw the reflection of my cut open belly. EEEK!

Mum and Dad waiting outside:

They pulled her out and called Lindsay over to have a look. Despite being a tad blue at first she was perfect.

She was brought over to me for a cuddle, she dribbled on my face and it was love at first sight.

He had had a few minutes to think about it and I asked him what her name was, he said ‘She looks like a Penelope, Penny’.

So Penelope it was! You can see him in the corner announcing to the world that Penelope May was born.

We were in my room only a few minutes when the flowers and presents started arriving!

Belly Pics

My belly has expanded quite a bit since the last photo update!

Last time I updated the belly pics I looked like this:
At 30 weeks 5 days:
30 weeks 5 days

2 weeks later at 32 weeks and 5 days:
32 weeks 5 days

As I am sure you all noticed:
Ta-da! We moved the fish tank!
32 weeks 5 days
That was a few hours before we bought some some fish to put in the fish tank. Guppies! They are breeding like mad, there must be something in the water. :-)

Here I am at 33 weeks and 5 days.
33 weeks and 5 days
I felt that ironing my dress was just taking matters a bit too far.
33 weeks and 5 days

35 weeks and 4 days.
Lindsay: “Smile!”
Me: “No way, get lost”
35 weeks and 4 days
I had been in pain for 4 days straight and it was really hot. No way was I going to smile. But Lindsay won’t take no for an answer and said something to get me smiling. No I don’t remember what, sometimes I even forget ummm Whathisname’s name….Lindsay’s name!
35 weeks and 4 days

I went to the doctor 2 days later who didn’t really know why I was having what felt like a continuous contraction. Sent me off for tests and another ultrasound. All which came back normal and I wasn’t in labour.

The baby totally looked like it was picking its nose in the ultrasound. I am so proud.

36 weeks and 5 days.
36 weeks 5 days
I am wearing the world’s most comfortable dress, I literally wore it for 5 days straight. And no I am not busting for a wee, I was holding my belly so you can see how massive it is.
36 weeks and 5 days

Which brings us up to date to this weekend’s Belly pics, 37 weeks and 5 days.
37 weeks and 5 days
“Let me out!”
37 weeks and 5 days
I can waddle like a pro!
37 weeks and 5 days

That day I waddled into Max Brenner with Lindsay for a chocolatey treat! Yum!

Baby is officially ripe. The due date is not until the 19th of October, but only 4% of babies are born on their due date! Most babies are born between 37 and 42 weeks gestation. I am 38 weeks tomorrow, so could go into labour any day now. Although I feel it might be later rather than sooner, Baby is having waaaaaayyy to much fun kicking me in the ribs and head-butting my bladder.

We will be keeping the world updated via twitter, feel free to add me @julajulz or my lovely “birth partners” lindsay @auxesis or my mum @moedeje one of us will probably be tweeting at one stage or another about my progress. (Mum and I have private accounts, but still add us so we can accept you as a follower).

And in case you are really really keen here is a video of the baby kicking my glasses through my belly.
